The Pleasure of Work… Burn Your Food?

I started working the moment I turned 13, which was the legal minimum age in Norway. Looking back, I wish I could have started earlier. Work was good for me; school was not. While education is essential for shaping responsible and capable individuals, it often lacks the hands-on, practical experience needed in real-world work environments. Learning by doing is at the core of everything we aim for—connecting knowledge to practical applications.

If we focus on academic learning only; without practicing communication, teamwork, understanding customer needs, or supporting colleagues; we may struggle to thrive in the workplace. Global collaboration between talented individuals is one of the most powerful forces for creating a better future. Learning, growing, and investing in skills can lead to financial success, but more importantly, it strengthens our ability to connect with and support each other across borders. When we make ourselves useful to one another, we foster understanding, tolerance, and progress.

In my early 20s, after working nearly 10 different jobs, a boss advised me to slow down, saying I would understand the importance of balance later in life. Yet, I’ve never seen work as a sacrifice but as a meaningful contribution.

If you don’t like your job, you may be pushing yourself in the wrong direction. Work isn’t just about instant gratification—it’s about finding purpose and usefulness. Most of us want to contribute to something greater, to help others, and get a smile and a salary in return. One of the greatest benefits of modern work is the ability to connect with people globally. Through collaboration, we can share value, exchange feedback, and refine our work based on real-world needs.
